Rituals for the New Moon: Letting Go and Preparing for Inner Work

New moon ritual candles for letting go and preparing for inner work

As the light wanes and the nights grow longer, we arrive at the New Moon Rituals…a cosmic checkpoint, a moment of stillness before new beginnings. In both nature and spirit, this is a time of turning inward.

The New Moon rituals marks the shift from completion to creation. It’s the threshold into the deeper half of the lunar cycle, where shadow work becomes not only natural but necessary. In both Vedic and Tantric traditions, this time is sacred for cleansing, clearing, and preparation.

This Tuesday, October 21st, we gather for our New Moon Ceremony….a space to honor what’s ending, release what no longer serves, and plant seeds for what wants to emerge. I hope you’ll join us.

The Tantric Path of Descent

Tantra teaches that the path to enlightenment is not up and away, but down and in. Into the body we go, embracing the feelings that arise. We dive deeper, exploring the darkness we’re taught to fear.. This season invites us to walk willingly into those depths….not to be consumed, but to be transformed.

In Ayurveda and yogic thought, we’re now fully in Vata season…dry, mobile, and cold. A time when the mind becomes more active and scattered, when anxiety can creep in if we’re not grounded. This is why grounding, slowing down, and nourishing the body becomes a spiritual act during this time.

Warm soups. Slow mornings. Gentle movement. These aren’t indulgences….they’re medicine.

Letting Go: A Sacred Release

Just as the trees let go of their leaves, you are invited to shed something this week. A belief, a habit, a relationship dynamic….anything that no longer supports your evolution.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I holding onto that is costing me peace?
  • What part of my identity is rooted in fear, rather than truth?
  • How can I create space for a more soul-aligned version of myself?

Tantric New Moon Ritual

Try this ritual on or near the New Moon (Tuesday, October 21st):

  1. Create a sacred space with candlelight, grounding scents (like sandalwood, cedarwood, or myrrh), and natural elements (leaves, stones, water).
  2. Write down what you’re ready to release. Be specific. Name it clearly.
  3. Breathe deeply into your belly, imagining the out-breath as a wind clearing old energy. Let each exhale carry away what no longer serves.
  4. Burn the paper safely (or bury it under a tree) while whispering:
“I honor what was. I release what no longer serves. I open to the mystery ahead.”
  5. Close by placing your hand on your heart and saying:
“I trust the darkness to reveal the light.”

If you can’t do the full ritual, even lighting a candle and taking three deep breaths with the intention to let go is enough. The universe hears your heart, not your performance.

Honoring the Season of Shadow

The New Moon rituals isn’t just a date on the calendar….it’s an invitation to slow down, simplify, and remember who you are without all the external noise. Let this week be your entry point into a quieter, deeper version of yourself. One that is ready to meet the shadow with curiosity and courage.

And if you feel called, join us for the New Moon Ceremony this Tuesday. We’ll hold space together, witness each other’s release, and plant seeds for the wisdom that wants to emerge.

This Week’s Reflection

What are you ready to release? What wants to be born in the space you create?

I’d love to hear what you’re letting go of and what you’re calling in. Reply, comment, or share….let’s honor this sacred threshold together.
