The Role of Meditation in Tantra: Finding Inner Stillness

Meditation has been a cornerstone of my journey into Tantra, offering me a pathway to inner stillness and profound self-awareness. In this post, I want to share my personal experiences and insights on the role of meditation in Tantra, and how it has helped me find a deeper connection with myself and the world around me.

My First Steps into Tantric Meditation
When I first started practicing “Tantric” meditation, I was skeptical; I mean, I had already tried many methods of meditation so I wasn’t convinced this would work with my ADHD. Sitting still and quieting my mind seemed like an impossible task back then. But I was determined to give it a try. I remember my first meditation session vividly. Sitting cross-legged in quiet, I focused on my breath and repeated a simple mantra in my mind. “I will do this, I can do this” and my mind wandered constantly, but I gently brought my focus back to my breath each time. It was challenging, but I left that session feeling a sense of calm I hadn’t experienced in years.  After a while, I found that I no longer needed to chant anything in my mind at all, but instead I just needed to breathe!

The Practice of Breath Awareness
One of the foundational practices in Tantric meditation is breath awareness. This involves focusing on the natural rhythm of your breath, observing each inhale and exhale without trying to change it. I started incorporating this practice into my daily routine. In the morning, before the busyness of the day took over, I would spend ten minutes sitting quietly, simply observing my breath. This practice helped me anchor myself in the present moment, reducing stress and increasing my overall sense of well-being.

Mantra Meditation
Mantra meditation has been another powerful tool in my Tantric practice. By repeating a sacred sound or phrase, I found that I could transcend my usual patterns of thought and access deeper states of consciousness. One mantra that resonated deeply with me is “Om Mani Padme Hum,” which is associated with compassion and enlightenment. Chanting this mantra aloud or silently has become a regular part of my meditation practice, bringing me a profound sense of peace and connection to the divine.

Visualizations and Guided Meditations
In addition to breath awareness and mantra meditation, Tantra also incorporates visualizations and guided meditations. These practices involve using mental imagery to focus the mind and evoke specific energies or states of being. One guided meditation that had a significant impact on me involved visualizing a lotus flower blossoming in my heart center. As I imagined each petal opening, I felt a sense of love and compassion expanding within me. This practice helped me cultivate a deeper sense of self-love and acceptance.

Overcoming Challenges in Meditation
Meditation hasn’t always been easy for me. There have been times when my mind felt too restless, or when emotions bubbled up that I wasn’t ready to face. But I’ve learned that these challenges are part of the process. One particularly challenging period was during a stressful time at work. My mind was constantly racing, and sitting down to meditate felt like an impossible task. Instead of giving up, I allowed myself to sit with whatever came up, whether it was restlessness, frustration, or sadness. By embracing these challenges, I discovered that they were opportunities for growth and healing.

The Benefits of Regular Practice
The benefits of a regular meditation practice have been profound for me. I’ve noticed increased mental clarity, emotional stability, and a deeper sense of inner peace. Meditation has become a sanctuary for me, a space where I can reconnect with my true self and find solace amidst the chaos of daily life. It’s also deepened my connection to the spiritual aspects of Tantra, helping me experience the divine within and around me.
