One of the biggest misunderstandings I had when I began this path was thinking that spirituality would make all decisions easy. That clarity would be like lightning—sudden, obvious, absolute. But what I’ve learned is this:
Clarity is not something you find. It’s something you build—a relationship with your inner knowing.
In Vedic philosophy, there’s a word for this inner knowing: Buddhi. It means higher intelligence, distinct from the mind (Manas) and the ego (Ahamkara). Buddhi is that calm, centered part of you that knows what’s true… even when your emotions or fears are noisy.
This week, as we close out June and approach the New Moon on June 25th, we’re being asked to practice discernment. To pause. To ask:
- What feels aligned?
- What feels like a pattern?
- What would my higher self choose right now?
Buddhi in the Vedic System
In Vedic teachings, the four parts of the mind are:
- Manas – lower mind, processing impressions
- Ahamkara – ego, identity
- Chitta – subconscious storehouse
- Buddhi – higher intellect, discernment
Buddhi is considered the faculty of discrimination—the ability to choose wisely. It’s what separates reaction from response.
When Buddhi is strong:
- We feel clear and grounded
- We make decisions without overthinking
- We honor long-term truth over short-term comfort
When Buddhi is weak or clouded:
- We get stuck in cycles of doubt
- We make impulsive or emotionally charged decisions
- We override our inner knowing to appease others
Tantra and the Path of Discernment
In Tantra, discernment isn’t about control—it’s about refining your perception. The Tantric path is filled with intensity, beauty, and transformation, and it requires you to know what is truly yours to engage with.
Tantra asks:
- Can you feel your “yes” and your “no” clearly?
- Can you honor your timing?
- Can you trust the pause, the space between impulses?
Discernment is sacred. It’s the act of choosing what aligns with your dharma, and having the courage to release what doesn’t.
Practices to Strengthen Buddhi and Discernment
- Trataka (Candle Gazing) – Focus on a single flame to sharpen inner stillness and clarity. Let thoughts pass like clouds. Practice witnessing.
- Decision Clarity Journaling – Write out a current decision. Beneath it, list: “Mind says,” “Fear says,” “Buddhi says.” Notice the difference.
Mantra for Buddhi & Mercury: Chant “Om Aim Hreem Budhaya Namaha” to strengthen discernment and activate Mercury’s clarity.
Embodied Yes/No – Ask your body yes-or-no questions. Pay attention to sensation—not logic. Your body doesn’t lie.
Today’s Thought Exercises:
- What’s a recent decision you made from alignment, not fear? How did it feel in your body?
- Where are you seeking external clarity that only your inner knowing can offer?
- What would it feel like to fully trust your inner compass—even if no one else understands it?
